In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth (Greek: Laburinthos, Labyrinthos)[ais an elaborate, confusing structure designed and constructed by the legendary artist Daedalus for the king Minos of Crete at Knossos. It was designed to house the Minotaur which was eventually destroyed by Theseus. Daedalus had so cunningly made the Labyrinth that he could barely escape it once he had constructed it.Although the earliest Cretan coins sometimes have branching (multicursal) patterns however, the single-path (unicursal) seven-course "Classical" design that does not have branches or dead ends came to be associated with the Labyrinth on coins from 430 BC. similar non-branching designs were commonly used to represent the Labyrinth - regardless of the fact that both logic and literary descriptions make it clear that the Minotaur had been trapped in a complex maze that was branching. The visual representations of the mythical Labyrinth, from Roman times to the Renaissance typically unicursal. The branching mazes came back into use only when hedge mazes became popular during the Renaissance.
