Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald is a waitress from Ozarks, shows up at the Hit Pit, a rundown Los Angeles gym owned and run by Frankie Dunn. Dunn is an Irish-American trainer who is a bit sexy, has been revealed to be estranged with his daughter. Frankie does not want to instruct Maggie as he doesn't like women, and because she's too old to compete in boxing. Eddie "Scrap-Iron" Dupris, Frankie's employee and friend, who is the Narrator of the film encourages and supports Maggie. Frankie's prize winner, "Big Willie", joins forces with Mickey Mack, a successful manager, after getting frustrated with Frankie refusing to take an offer for a championship bout. Frankie accepts with a tepid smile to Maggie is her new coach. Maggie fights her way up the women's amateur division under Frankie's guidance. As she has built an image of quick KOs, Frankie must resort to bribery to get other managers to place their young fighters against her. Scrap concerned that Frankie declines multiple opportunities to fight big, arranges a meeting for Maggie with Mickey Mack but, out of the loyalty of Frankie she refuses. Frankie provides Maggie a Gaelic name, Mo Chuisle, which she embroiders on her boxing robe. However, she fails to explain its significance to her. As she continues to win, Maggie and Frankie travel to Europe. Maggie saves enough to pay her mother for the purchase of a home. Maggie's mother, however, berates Maggie for her insistence that her government assistance is being misused.
