Jay Adams

The Bahne-Cadillac Del Mar Nationals was announced in 1975 and the Z-Boys formed a skate team. Adams took second in the Junior Men's Freestyle. The Z-Boys style was defined by Adams' enthralling energy and swaggering, surfer-like movements. This was in contrast to the traditional stylethat was still influenced by 1960s-style gymnastic tricks. [2] Adams' ability to turn near-disasters into never-before-seen feats of style and agility was termed "an athletic stream-of-consciousness" by the 2001 documentary about the team, Dogtown and Z-Boys.Much of Adams' and the rest of the Zephyr team's fame is due to photo-journalist and writer Craig Stecyk's "Dogtown Chronicles" in the 1975 relaunch of Skateboarder Magazine. The article in Skateboarder Magazine described the Z-Boys' exploits that saw them riding vacant swimming pools in Southern California for two years. It laid the foundations of vertical skating. The international reach of Stecyk's Dogtown articles and skateboard-industry sponsorship made skateboarding an industry that could be a lucrative career. At age 15, Adams was one of the first skateboarders to be shown "catching air" (time spent in the air following a launch) just above the surface of a swimming pool
