Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to one teenage mother who was later moved to inner-city Milwaukee. She has said that she was molested throughout her early teenage and childhood years . She became pregnant at 14years old. Her son was born prematurely and passed away in infancy. Winfrey was transferred to Nashville, Tennessee to live with Vernon Winfrey. She was a radio anchor for the local evening news and was also a anchor co-anchor. Winfrey's acrobatic and emotional style led her to move to daytime talk show. She managed to take the show in Chicago from third to first place and then launch her own production firm. The show's focus is on literature, self-improvement and mindfulness. Though she was criticised for her controversial ideas on self-help and fostering a confessional society, Winfrey has been praised for her capacity to conquer obstacles and be a generous donor. In fact she was honored by President Obama presented Winfrey the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. In 2008, she founded her own network, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
