Cris Collinsworth

Collinsworth's distinctive combination of height and speed attracted interest from football clubs in college throughout the South. Collinsworth was given an athletic scholarship from Doug Dickey to the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. Collinsworth was initially drafted to play in the Gators in the option offense an offensive quarterback. However, Collinsworth made a remarkable touchdown pass to Derrick Gaffney to score a touchdown that was 99 yards. The throw is the longest touchdown throw in NCAA history. In his first season as a coach, Steve Spurrier, a former Gator quarterback, was named Collinsworth's position coach for wide receiver. Collinsworth excelled at his new job even though the offense of Florida wasn't enough to save Dickey and his team. In 1978, 1979, and 1980 Collinsworth was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection. He was also named an Academic All-American in the year 1980. 8 Collinsworth was a captain in the senior class, was the most significant player on the team's one-year change during the course of NCAA Division I football. The Gator team went 8-4 in 1979 following an unbeaten record in 1979. It was the first year that Charlie Pell had as head coach in Florida as the head coach. Collinsworth was awarded the 1980 Tangerine Bow's MVP following his college playing career.
