He attends Hikarizaka highschool and is described as an undergraduate. But, he's not known for starting fights. When he was a child, his mother, Atsuko was killed in a vehicle accident. Since since then, Tomoya has been living with his father, Naoyuki. They fight a lot and Tomoya was unable to fulfill his desire to play pro basketball when he injures his shoulder in an altercation with Naoyuki. He is a childhood friend Kotomi Ichinose and is the best friend of Moonohara, Youhei. At the beginning of the graphic novel Tomoya meets Nagisa Furukawa, who is his friend of choice, and later his girlfriend/wife.In After Story, Tomoya is an electrician after he graduates from high school. He gets married Nagisa, and they have one daughter named Ushio. Tomoya takes care of Nagisa as she grows unwell during her pregnancy but she passes away following the birth of her daughter. Tomoya is depressed and gives Ushio to Akio, Sanae. Then, Tomoya realizes that he's putting Ushio through the same type of relationship that he and his father experienced and is soon a better father. Tomoya realizes that Ushio, the Girl in the Illusionary World was dead. Then, he utilizes light orbs to turn around the hands of time back to the day that Nagisa is in labor and stops Nagisa and Ushio from dying. Tomoya is able to live with his wife and daughter in an uninvolved family.
