Mehmet Cengiz Oz is an American former professor of cardiothoracic surgical at Columbia University. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware to Turkish immigrants. Dual citizens of the U.S. and Turkey, Oz served in the Turkish Army during the 1980s for a period of 60 days of mandatory training,[5][6] specifically for those who live in foreign countries, to maintain the Turkish citizenship. After that, he started his residency in surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in 1986. He was made an Columbia University professor of surgery in 2001. In 2018 the university announced his retirement as a professor emeritus. In 2003, Oprah Winfrey was the first guest on the Discovery Channel program Second Opinion with Dr. Oz, and she was a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, making more than 60 appearances. In 2009, The Dr. Oz Show was a weekly show on TV that focuses on medical issues and health, was launched by Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures Television and ran for 13 seasons. Oz's promotion of pseudosciences, such as faith healing, and alternative medicine has been the subject of criticism from many medical journals and doctors.
