Mark William Calaway (born March 24, 1965) is better known under the ring name The Undertaker, is an American retired professional wrestler. Calaway is widely considered to be one of America's top professional wrestlers. He spent the majority of his career with WWF/E. The "Deadman" Undertaker gimmick was critically acclaimed and he was inducted into WWE Hall of Fame in 2022. Calaway is still employed by WWE via a 15 year contract that was signed in 2019. Calaway started his career in 1987 and worked under various techniques for World Class Championship Wrestling and other affiliate promotions. Calaway was crowned USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion and WCWA Texas Heavyweight Champion during this period. After signing with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1989, he had a brief stint in the middle-card with "Mean" Mark Callous, before becoming a member of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, which later became WWE) in 1990.Calaway was rebranded "The Undertaker" once joining the WWF. As one of WWE's most high-profile and popular characters,[14][15] the Undertaker is known for his funereal, undead macabre "Deadman" persona. This has gained a significant amount of mainstream attention and earned him the Wrestling Observer Newsletter award for the best gimmick, an unprecedented five years in a row. The Undertaker, who has been with the company for 30 years, is the longest-running wrestler in the history of the company. The Undertaker is also among the most well-known participants of the Attitude Era, which was a highly rated, envelope-pushing generation in the WWF/E's late 1990s/early2000s. [17] Calaway made a change to the Undertaker's gimmicks in 2000 by adding a human aspect as well as a biker-themed identity and later dubbed "The American Badass". Calaway revived Deadman Undertaker in 2004, with residual aspects of American Badass Undertaker remaining.For the better part of his professional career, The Undertaker was observed as the focal point of WWE's flagship annual show, WrestleMania, where he became esteemed for The Streak, a string of 21 consecutive wins. He is also known for pairing with his half-brother in the storyline Kane, with whom were able to alternately fight and collaborated together as the Brothers of Destruction from 1997 until 2020. While wrestling under The Undertaker gimmick, Calaway was the winner of the WWF/E Championship four times, the World Heavyweight Championship three times as well as the Hardcore Championship once and the World Tag Team Championship six times. He also took home the Royal Rumble match in 2007. He is one of the WWE's most popular pay-per-view stars, headlining several pay-per-view events as well as WrestleMania on five occasions. Undertaker has retired from professional wrestling in 2020 . He was a guest at that year's Survivor Series, 30 years ago from when he made his debut on the screen for the company at the same event's pay-per-view brand. The Undertaker was later inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as the main inductee for the class of 2022.
