He was born Michael Jerome Williams, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee. He was one of twelve children born to Denise Oher. The mother of Denise Oher was victim of alcohol and crack cocaine addiction and his father, Michael Jerome Williams was often in prison. In his nine years of school, he received little attention or discipline. When he was seven He was placed in foster care. He was in various foster homes and went through times of being homeless. Oher was a senior in high school, was the younger brother of and later killed in prison. Oher was an freshman at Memphis the public high school. Tony Henderson, an auto mechanic who was living with him, suggested that the student apply for admission to Briarcrest Christian School. Henderson was looking to send his son to the school in order to fulfill the dying desires of his mother. Henderson thought Oher might be able to be able to enroll. Hugh Freeze, the school's football coach, submitted Oher's application. He sought permission to accept him, however, Oher was required to finish the home-study course first. This program was never finished by Oher however, his acceptance was granted after the headmaster found out that Oher was exiled from public schools.
