Lionel Andres Messi (Spanish pronunciation: [ljo’nel an’dres ’mesi]) is a Argentine professional soccer player. He is a forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain, and also captains Argentina's national team. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest footballers ever. Messi won seven Ballon d'Or Awards, [note a record six European Golden Shoes] and was selected to the Ballon d'Or Dream Team in 2020. Prior to his departure from the club in 2021 Messi had played his entire professional career with Barcelona and received a record number of club-record 35 awards which included 10 La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey titles and four UEFA Champions Leagues. For his country winning the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. A prolific goal scorer and a creative player, Messi holds the records for the most goals in La Liga (474), most hat-tricks , both in La Liga (36) and the UEFA Champions League (8) as well as the most assists in La Liga (192) and the Copa America (17). Messi is also the record holder for most international goals achieved by the average South American male (98). Messi has scored over 790 career senior goals for club and country, and is the player with the highest number of goals by a player for a single club (672).
