 Lionel Messi[note 1[note 1] (Spanish pronunciation: [ljo'nel an'dres 'mesi(listen) (listen) born on June 24, 1987) Also called Leo Messi, is an Argentine professional footballer who plays forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and captains the Argentina national team. The widely acclaimed as one of the greatest players ever, Messi has won a record-breaking seven Ballon d'Or awards,[note 2] a record six European Golden Shoes, and in 2020 was chosen to the Ballon d'Or Dream Team. He spent his entire professional life at Barcelona before he left the club in 2021. In Barcelona, he took home 35 club-record trophies, including 10 La Liga titles (7 Copa del Rey titles) and four UEFA Champions Leagues (4 UEFA Champions Leagues). With his country they won the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. A prolific goalscorer and an inventive player, Messi holds the records for the most goals scored in La Liga (474), the most hat-tricks made in La Liga (36) and the UEFA Champions League (8), and most assists in La Liga (192) and the Copa America (17). He has also the most international goals scored by a South American male (98). Messi has scored more than 790 senior career goals for his country and club, and is the player with the highest number of goals scored by a player in one club (672).
