Katy Perry

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, born on October 25, 1984, is an American performer, songwriter, and TV host. Vogue has called her the "Queen of Camp", refers to her influence on pop music as well as her zany fashion. Perry, who began her musical career in gospel when she was 16, released her debut album Katy Hudson under Red Hill Records in 2001. It was not a success commercially. When she was 17, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue secular music. Later, she adopted the stage name of "Katy Perry" and was named after her mother's maiden name. Columbia Records signed her to record however she was subsequently dropped before she signed with Capitol Records. She rose to stardom with One of the Boys (2008) the pop-rock album featuring two singles "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold" as well as "Hot n' Cold," which made it to the top of the U.S. charts. Billboard Hot 100 respectively. The disco-influenced pop album Teenage Dream (2010) spawned five U.S. number one singles--"California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T. ", and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F. )" -- the first album to feature a female vocalist. Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection (2012) was a reissue of this album. It was the source of "Part of Me", the U.S. number one single. Two of her songs about empowerment, "Roar" (US number one) and "Dark Horse" (US number one) came from Prism (2013). Both their respective music videos created Perry the first artist to reach one billion views on Vevo. Witness, an electropop album with feminist themes and political subtexts, was Perry's first video to reach one billion views on Vevo. Smile (2020), however, was inspired by her recent experience as a mother and her journey to mental health. Following that, she started her Las Vegas concert residency entitled Play (2021-2099) and was praised by critics as well as commercial popularity.
