Buzot was elected deputy to the National Convention in 1792 and was a member of the Girondists with the assistance of Madame Roland. Buzot was involved in a heated dispute with Jean-Paul Marat, who was the principal opponent of the Girondists. He demanded that the formation of a National Guard be formed from the various departments to protect the Convention against the Paris crowds. Buzot's idea was accepted, however, it was not executed. The Parisians were then able to make Buzot an object of their campaign of hate by declaring him an individual target. Buzot was executed for the Royalist exiles who were unable to go back to France as well as anyone who wanted for the return of the monarchy. He also voted against Georges Danton and The Mountain and voted against the establishment of the Committee of Public Safety and Revolutionary Tribunal. However He abstained from the Tribunal's Marat's case prior to it being brought up by the Girondists. His servant was arrested and taken into custody at the Jardin du Luxembourg on May 5, 1793.
