Cutkosky began doing photo ads at the age of four years old to provide an opportunity for his mom and him to spend time together. After a few advertisements, Cutkosky was invited to audition for commercials and after that, films. He was offered his first film part as Carl along with Vince Vaughn in the Christmas comedy Fred Claus (2007) when seven years old. Cutkosky, who was nine years old, played the character of Barto, a mythical spirit that appeared in The Unborn (2009). He also had the chance to perform alongside Gary Oldman. In 2009, Cutkosky was chosen to portray Carl Gallagher, the second-youngest Gallagher sibling, and the most problem-maker. Emmy Rossum, William H. Macy and Cutkosky play the show's protagonists. Shameless ran for 11 seasons starting in 2021 and continues to be the longest-running original scripted show on Showtime.
