McLaughlin was an actor in his debut part as a young child in the musical Lost in the Stars in Cooperstown (New York) at the Glimmerglass Oper House. McLaughlin's Broadway debut was in the role of Young Simba in the musical's main character (2012-14). Following that, he appeared as an actor on TV shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Unforgettable. McLaughlin's most memorable part in 2016 was that of Lucas Sinclair on the Netflix popular series Stranger Things (2016-2018). McLaughlin received nominations for the BET YoungStars Award in 2017 and was awarded the award for Outstanding Performance by a Young Person at the NAACP Image Awards 2018. McLaughlin's debut feature film was Concrete Cowboy in 2020. He co-starred alongside Jharrel Jerome as well as Idris Elba. The film received a favourable reviews. McLaughlin was recognized as an honoree in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2020 list in Hollywood and Entertainment in December 2020.
