McLaughlin's first acting role was as a young child in the opera Lost in the Stars in Cooperstown, New York at the Glimmerglass Opera House. His Broadway debut was as Young Simba, the musical's main role (2012-14). In the following years, he was guest-starring on television series such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Unforgettable. McLaughlin's breakthrough role was in the form of his portrayal of Lucas Sinclair in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (2016-present). In 2017, he was a nominee for the BET Young Stars Award, and in 2018, he was awarded the award for Outstanding Performance by a Young Person at the NAACP Image Awards.In 2020, McLaughlin made his feature film debut with Concrete Cowboy, co-starring with Idris Elba and Jharrel Jerome. The film received positive reviews. In December of 2020 McLaughlin was selected as an honoree on Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2021 in the field of Hollywood and Entertainment.
