Culpepper received an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida in Gainesville. He was a member of the Gators' teams that included Coaches Galen Hall, and Steve Spurrier from 1988 to 1991. During his senior season in 1991, Culpepper was a standout defensive tackle and team captain for the Gators' Southeastern Conference (SEC) champions team. He was a first-team All-SEC selection and a consensus first-team All-American. He concluded his college career with eighteen quarterback sacks and 47.5 tackles for loss. He was also on the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years, was a first-team Academic All-American, and received the Draddy Trophy recognizing him as the college football's top student-athlete. While Culpepper was a Florida undergraduate, he was also an active part of Sigma Chi Fraternity (Gamma Theta Chapter). Culpepper completed his bachelor's degree in history from Florida in the middle of his senior year. He was enrolled in a masters-level program in exercise science and sports sciences during the final football season. Culpepper ended his professional career, and then returned to law school and graduate school full-time. He received his master's degree and J.D. degree from Florida in 2001. Inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, he was deemed a "Gator Great". He was placed No.1 by the Gainesville Sun's sports editors. 47 all-time best player during the first 100 years of the Florida Gators football team.
