Philip David Charles Collins LVO (born 30 January 1951) is an English singer, drummer, songwriter, record producer and actor. He was the lead vocalist and drummer for Genesis, and has also enjoyed a successful solo career. Collins was an individual artist who scored seven US top 40 singles and three UK top 40 singles between 1982 between 1982 and 1990. When his work with Genesis and his collaborations with other artists in addition to his solo career is summed up and he scored the most US top 40 singles than any other artist during the 1980s. The top-rated singles during that period are "In the Air Tonight", “Against All Odds” (Take a look at me now), "One More Night" and "Another Day in Paradise". Collins was born in West London and studied drama at school. He had his first part as an actor as a child, as the Artful Dodger in the West End musical Oliver! Then, he pursued a musical career, joining Genesis in 1970 as their drummer, and becoming lead singer in 1975, following the departure of Peter Gabriel. Collins started a successful solo career in the 1980s, initially inspired by his marital breakdown and love of soul music, releasing the albums Face Value (1981), Hello I must be Going (1982) and No Jacket Required (1985) and ...But Really (1989). According to AllMusic, Collins was "one of the most well-known pop and adult contemporary artists throughout the 1980s and beyond." In addition, he was famous for his distinctive gated reverb sound that was featured on several of his records. He was also the sole participant in the two Live Aid concerts in 1985. He was also back in acting, appearing in Miami Vice (1985) and later starring in Buster (1988). Collins quit Genesis in 1996 to concentrate on his own solo career. He composed music for Disney's Tarzan (1999) which for which he won an Oscar for Best Original Song. He returned to Genesis for their Turn It On Again Tour in 2007. After a retirement of five years, Collins published an autobiography in 2016 to reflect on his family . He concluded the Not Dead Yet Tour in 2019. In 2020, Collins returned to Genesis for a second reunion tour. The tour concluded in March 2022.
