Evander Holyfield

Evander Holyfield, born October 19th, 1962, is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1984 until 2011. He reigned as the undisputed cruiserweight champion in the late 1980s and at heavyweight in the beginning of the 1990s. He is the only boxer to win the undisputed championship in two weight classes in the three belt era. Holyfield, also known as "the Real Deal" is the only heavyweight world champion. He held the WBA, WBC and IBF titles between 1990 and 1992, and the WBA as well as the IBF titles from 1993 to 1994, and the WBA title once more from 1997-1999. Holyfield was an amateur and won a bronze medal at 1984's Summer Olympics for the United States at light heavyweight. He made the switch to professional wrestling at 21 years old before moving to cruiserweight in 1985 and taking his first World championship the following year, defeating Dwight Muhammad Qawi for the WBA title. Holyfield continued to beat Ricky Parkey and Carlos de Leon to take home the WBC and IBF titles, becoming the reigning cruiserweight champion. He moved up to heavyweight in 1988 and then defeating Buster Douglas in 1990 to take the unifying WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles as well as the undisputed heavyweight championship. He was able to defend his titles three times, scoring victories against previous champions George Foreman and Larry Holmes and then suffering his first professional loss to Riddick Bowe in 1992. Holyfield won the title back in a rematch against Bowe the following year. Bowe had previously lost the WBC title. These titles were taken by Holyfield in 1994 during an upset over Michael Moorer. Holyfield had to retire from the sport due to health issues in 1994, however he returned a year later and was in great health. He defeated Mike Tyson in 1996 and was able to regain the WBA title. The fight was called by The Ring magazine the Fight of the year and the most tense fight of the year. This was the first time that Holyfield the first boxer after Muhammad Ali to win a world heavyweight title three times. Holyfield won a rematch in 1997 against Tyson, which saw the latter disqualified in round three for biting off Holyfield's ear. He also won a second match against Michael Moorer, and was given the IBF title. In 1999, Holyfield fought Lennox Lewis in an unification fight for the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles. It ended in an unpopular draw. After eight months, Holyfield lost to John Ruiz in a rematch. The next year, he beat John Ruiz for the vacant WBA title, becoming the first boxer to be able to claim the heavyweight title four times. Holyfield lost a second time to Ruiz seven months later and was able to take on Ruiz three times in the draw. Holyfield retired in 2014, and is ranked number 777 in The Ring's list of 100 greatest boxers of all time[3] . Also, in 2002, he was named the 22nd best fighter of the last 80 years. [4] He is currently listed as No.91 on the list of BoxRec's the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all time. BoxingScene has ranked him as the most powerful cruiserweight in history. [6] He also holds the world title for three decades: the 1980s 1990s and the 2000s.
