Santiago Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy, has dreams of finding a treasure inside the ruins of a church. A Gypsy fortune-teller explains the significance of his dream that keeps coming back to him. The dream is taken by the woman as a prophecy, and informs him that he'll find an ancient treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. Santiago then meets Melchizedek an old king or the King of Salem. He requests Melchizedek to buy Santiago's sheep in order for him to go to Egypt to complete his "Personal Legend". A man is said to be capable of transporting Santiago to the Pyramids, however, he robs Santiago of any money he earned from his sheep. Santiago is required to become an artisan in the field of crystals to earn enough money to get to the pyramids. Santiago meets an Englishman on the way seeking an alchemist. He continues on his quest with his friend. Santiago is in love with Fatima the Arabian girl, once they arrive at an oasis. He proposes marriage to her. He assures her he will marry him only after the journey is over. He initially was irritated but he regretted it later.
