Rattler attended Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Arizona, for all of his four years in high school. He broke the Arizona record for school's passing when he turned 18. Rattler was a quarterback for 11,083 yards in his four years with 116 TDs in passing. He also gained 1,040 yards rushing with 14 rushing touchdowns. He was named MVP of the Elite 11 in Texas in his senior year. In his final year at Pinnacle Rattler appeared in the Netflix documentary QB1: Beyond the Lights, produced by Peter Berg. Rattler was then suspended for violating the district's code of conduct, and was ineligible to play for the remainder of the season because of cheating.He initially said he had an injured MCL, but the school administration later advised him not to discuss the exact nature of the code of conduct violation
