Simu Liu

Liu was born in Harbin (China) on 19 April 1989. Liu is the son of Zhenning Liu and Zheng Liu. The parents of Zheng and Zhenning were able to get into Beijing University, despite considerable opposition to pursue engineering. His father Zhenning was a student in America to pursue his PhD and his mother was employed in Beijing. Liu was raised in Harbin by his grandparents up to the age of 5. He described his childhood as idyllic and joyful. His parents later moved to Canada together with him. They enjoyed a lucrative job as dishwashers and also as aerospace engineers. Liu recalled being raised by his parents in Harbin, China, in circumstances that he said were "idyllic and joyful". Liu's parents "hothoused" his maths skills at the age of five. They also assigned assignments that required him to study the biographies of scientists and algebra. Liu was a student at the University of Toronto Schools as an high school student. He later studied the field of business administration at Ivey Business School, University of Western Ontario. Liu was awarded a distinction at the end of 2011.
