Richard Benjamin Harrison

Harrison and his wife relocated from the city of Las Vegas with $5,000 in their savings. In April 1981, Harrison and their three sons moved to Las Vegas. There, Harrison and Rick established Gold & Silver Coin Shop. The shop was located at 1501 Las Vegas Boulevard. The Harriso was granted the license to purchase and sell secondhand goods. Harrison's son Rick writes in his autobiography that he and his father have long wished to transform the shop to a pawn shop but the 1955 Las Vegas law limiting pawn licenses to one per 50 residents prevented the idea. By 1988 the city's population of over 200,000 was rapidly growing which is why Harrison asked the city statistician periodically to monitor the number of residents. After a few legal battles, the Harrisons were granted their pawn license in the year 1989. The year was 1989 when Harrison and his father established the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop located at 713 Las Vegas Boulevard South, less than two miles from the Las Vegas Strip.By 2005, Harrison and his father were lending around $3 million per year that brought in about $700,000 in interest revenue.
