Beckinsale was the eldest of three children born to Arthur John Beckinsale (Anglo-Burmese dad) and Maggie Barlow (English mother). In 1977, Beckinsale said that he could be closely related to the actor Charles Laughton. Beckinsale was an undergraduate at College House Junior School in Chilwell. He was Dopey in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs which was his first of numerous school productions. (#4: 17. When he was a teenager Beckinsale was in the role in Tobias The Angel as well as Hsieh-Ping-Kueiin Lady Precious Stream' leading character. The role earned him an excellent review in the Nottingham Evening Post. Beckinsale aged fifteen years old at the time, had aspirations to become an actor professionally. But the age limit was too low for him to go to the drama school. Beckinsale worked for a year working in various manual tasks, such as periods as an apprentice upholsterer as well as a pipe inspector, and an assistant at a supermarket. 26-29 Beckinsale was just 16 when he began his studies at Nottingham College in Clarendon. He enrolled in the drama teacher's program and stayed for the next two years there until he could apply to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Beckinsale was rejected on his initial audition to RADA and was accepted on the second time. He was among just 31 applicants who were successful from a total more than 12,500 applicants. [4]: 38 Beckinsale was given a comedy award while at RADA.
