 Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (/’baId@n/(listen) BY–d@n) is an American politician, and the 46th president of the United States. He was born on November 20, 1942. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously was the 47th vice president from 2009 to 2017 under the presidency of Barack Obama, and represented Delaware in the United States Senate from 1973 until 2009.Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden relocated with his family to Delaware in 1953. He studied at the University of Delaware before earning his law degree at Syracuse University. After his election to the New Castle County Council in 1970, he was the sixth-youngest senator of the United States. He was 29 years old when he was elected into the US Senate from Delaware in 1972. Biden was chair or ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 12 years. He chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1995. He also led the effort to approve the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act as well as the Violence Against Women Act; and was in charge of the oversight of six U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings, including the contentious hearings for Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.Biden did not win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 and 1988. Barack Obama chose Biden as his running mate during the 2012 and 2008 presidential elections. During his two terms as vice president under Obama, Biden frequently represented the administration during negotiations with congressional Republicans as well as a frequent advisor to Obama.Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, defeated incumbents Donald Trump and Mike Pence in the 2020 presidential election. On the 20th of January, 2021, Biden became the most senior president in U.S. history and the first to have a female vice president. As president, Biden has addressed the COVID-19 epidemic and its subsequent recession. Biden has signed the American Rescue Plan Act and the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Biden also signed the Inflation Reduction Act. Biden has also has signed the Respect for Marriage Act. It codified protections for the United States for same-sex marriages and the repeal of DOMA. Ketanji Brown Johnson was named to the Supreme Court. In the realm of foreign policy, Biden restored America's membership in the Paris Agreement on climate change. Biden completed the withdrawal from Afghanistan of U.S. troops. During the period, the Afghan government fell , and the Taliban took control. He responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 by inflicting sanctions on Russia as well as authorizing the shipments of weapons and foreign aid shipments to Ukraine.
