Greenwell was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, to an French mother and an English father. The family moved back to London's South Kensington neighbourhood before her second birthday. She was a student at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art for a year. Greenwell described it as good but she realized that she wasn't interested in going to drama school.
