Barre Seid

Through his anonymous foundation, Seid donated $825,000 to Shimer College between 2007 and the year 2008. An ex-student analyzed tax returns and then made the donation public. Thomas Lindsay was elected president of the school in January 2009. Lindsay had plans to boost the reputation of the school and to increase the number of trustees. Lindsay also increased the number of trustees on the board from 22 to 13, with many having financial connections to Seid. A majority of the board members who were elected to the new position were conservative in their political affiliation. This caused some alumni, students and faculty members to assert that the school was being taken over by right-wing. Lindsay tried to amend the mission of the school in the year 2010 however, she was rejected by faculty, students, and faculty. The trustees in April decided to eliminate Lindsay from the presidency , a vote of 18-16.
