Morgan was born in Brooklyn on November 10, 1968. He was raised in Brooklyn's Marlboro Houses, Tompkins Houses and Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhoods. His parents were Alicia Warden, a homemaker as well as Jimmy Morgan, a musician who left the family when he was six years old. Morgan was named Tracy by his father to honor a platoon mate and platoon mate who was sent to Vietnam with his. The soldier was killed just days after. Morgan attended DeWitt Clinton High School. In 1985, when he was 17 during his senior year, he discovered that his father was infected with HIV through the use of hypodermic needles. His father died in January 1987, at the age of 38. Morgan got married to Sabina the girl he was with that year. He quit highschool just four credits short to get his diploma to take care of his father who was ill. [3] Living on welfare, Morgan sold crack cocaine with limited success,[8] but started earning money from performing street-level comedy after his best friend was murdered. In 2009, he said to me: "He would tell me, Tracy, man you should be performing comedy." He was killed just a week later. This was my Vietnam. I had my survival guilt when I started to achieve the status of a successful comedian. Why I made it out and others didn't.Morgan began his stand-up comedy career successfully enough that he "finally relocated to a pleasant neighborhood in [The Bronx neighborhood ofRiverdale] Riverdale after a deteriorating apartment that was located near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
