Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (born July 3, 1962), known professionally as Tom Cruise, is an American actor and producer. One of the highest-paid actors, he has won various accolades such as the Honorary Palme d'Or and three Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards. His films have earned more than four billion dollars in North America and over $11.1 billion worldwide,[2] making him among the highest-grossing box-office stars of all time.Cruise began his acting career in the mid-80s and was able to make his mark with leading roles in the comedy film Risky Business (1983) and action film Top Gun (1986). The film received acclaim for his roles in the dramas The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988) as well as Born on the Fourth of July (1989). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his character Ron Kovic in the film. For the latterfilm, he won an award for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and was awarded his second Academy Award nomination. Cruise's performance as a motivational speaker in the film Magnolia (1999) was rewarded with another Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.Since since then, Cruise has largely starred in action and science fiction films, establishing himself as an action star, often performing his own dangerous stunts.
