Angela Evelyn Bassett (born August 16 1958) is an American actress. Bassett has received numerous awards, including three Black Reel Awards, a Golden Globe Award, seven NAACP Image Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as nominations for an Academy Award and seven Primetime Emmy Awards.Bassett began her acting career in the 1980s after graduating from Yale University. After a handful of roles in Boyz n the Hood (1991), Reva Styles (1992), as well as Tina Turner (1993), Bassett made her acting debut in the biopic "What's Love Got to Do With It". This film brought the actress an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The actress went on to appear in numerous acclaimed and successful films, including as Betty Shabazz in both Malcolm X (1992) and Panther (1995), as Katherine Jackson in The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992) and as Voletta Wallace in Notorious (2009), as Amanda Waller in Green Lantern (2011), and for the role of Coretta Scott King in Betty & Coretta (2013). Other roles in films include Bernandine Harris' Waiting to Exhale (1995), Rachel Constantine's Contact (1997) as well as Stella Payne's How Stella Got Her Groove back (1998), Janet Williams (Music of the Heart) (1999), Lynne Jaks in Olympus Has Fallen (2012) and London Has Fallen (2016), the Queen Ramonda in Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2019).Bassett's character as Rosa Parks in The Rosa Parks Story (TV film) was a reason why she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. In 2013, Bassett had a recurring role on the FX horror anthology series American Horror Story: Coven, earning a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the form of a Miniseries or a Movie. She was a series regular for Freak Show, the series' fourth season, portraying Desiree Dupree. For this role, she was awarded a second Primetime Emmy Award nomination. She was Ramona Royale on Hotel 5 as a film star. Bassett returned to the series's sixth season Roanoke, portraying an alcoholic actress named Monet Tumusiime. She is a an unemployed mother and ex-police officer Lee Harris in the My Roanoke Nightmare documentary, and she reprised her role as Marie Laveau in a guest part in the eighth season of Apocalypse. In 2018, Bassett began producing and playing in the Fox first responder drama series 9-1-1, playing LAPD patrol sergeant Athena Grant.
