Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor DBE (February 27th, 1932 - March 23 2011,) was a British and American actress. Her career began as a child actress in the early 1940s and was one of the most popular actors of classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950s. She then was the highest-paid film star in the 1960s while remaining an iconic public figure for the rest of her life. The American Film Institute named Taylor the seventh-highest-rated female screen icon of Classic Hollywood cinema in 1999. Taylor was born in London to famous American parents. Her move to Los Angeles with her family in 1939. Within a year, she began her acting career with a minor part in the Universal Pictures film "There's One Born Every minute (1942)." After a brief appearance in National Velvet (1944), Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer signed her. In the 1950s she moved to roles that were more mature. She starred in the comedy Father of the Bride (1950) and was highly appreciated for her performance in A Place in the Sun (1951). Despite being one of MGM's most bankable actors, Taylor wished to end her career in the late 1950s. She was dissatisfied with the control of the studio and disliked many of the films to which she was assigned. In the late 1950s, Taylor began to receive more roles, beginning with the dramatic drama Giant (1956). The actress continued to be successful in film and television during the following years. Two Tennessee Williams plays were adapted into films: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and Suddenly, Last Summer (599); Taylor was awarded a Golden Globe as Best Actress. Although she disliked her role as a call-girl in BUtterfield 8 (1960), her final film for MGM and won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.During the production of the film Cleopatra in the year 1961, Taylor and co-star Richard Burton began an extramarital relationship that caused scandal. They were married in 1964, despite public outrage. They were referred to as "Liz" and "Dick" by the media. They starred together in eleven films, including The V.I.P.s (1963), The Sandpiper (65), The Taming of the Shrew(677) and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1967). (1966). Taylor received the highest praise of her career in Woolf and was awarded her second Academy Award and several other awards for her performances. In 1974 Taylor and Burton broke up. However, they reconciled quickly, and they remarried in the year 1975. The second marriage ended with divorce in 1976.Taylor's acting career started to decline in the late 1960s, although she continued to be a part of films until mid-1970s, following when she shifted her attention to the work of her sixth husband, United States Senator John Warner (R-Virginia). In the 1980s, she appeared in her first substantial stage roles and in several TV series and films. After Sophia Loren, Taylor was the second celebrity to launch her own perfume brand. Taylor was one of the first celebs to be involved in HIV/AIDS activism. She co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985, as well as the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991. She dedicated her life to charity in the early 1990s until her death. She was given the Presidential Citizens Medal. Taylor's private life was the focus of media attention throughout her life. Taylor was married to seven times, was converted to Judaism and suffered several serious illnesses. She also led an extravagant lifestyle, which included one of the most precious private collections of jewelry in the country. Taylor was 79 when she passed away in 2011 of congestive heart insufficiency after years of suffering from poor health.
